As we did last year, we met over at Todd Zuercher's house on Saturday morning so the Arizona contingent could drive over to California together. Winston and Margaret Brown were on hand with their 383 Chevy powered 1968 3/4 cab, along with Dean and Bonnie Hathaway in their 1973 Wagon and Todd Zuercher with his soft top equipped 1969 rig.
We hit heavy traffic during the California part of the trip (again), and had to quickly check into our motels before heading out for the Saturday evening pre-party at Angelo's Hamburgers.
As usual, there were lots of great rigs and Bronco people there and more poured in as the evening progressed. I recall talking to Roger Bell and his wife there for the first time.
Doug Schulz, along with wife Jean and daughters Erica and Daniell, Bronco'd over on Friday in their Red, White, and Blue 1972 head-turner to spend a couple of days enjoying amusement parks in the rain before Fab Fords. They joined up with the rest of the ACB clan at the Angelo's blowout. Jon Hanna (ClassicBroncos.com) also showed up to shore up the Arizona connection.
The next day we joined the thousands of other Ford fanatics at the Fab Fords Forever car show. The Broncos were again located in the 'offroad' section of the Knotts Berry Farm parking lot.
This is nice, since the grass is much nicer to roll around on underneath a Bronco while checking out mods or trying to sneak in a nap.
Doug's fancy new custom aluminum radiator and one-of-a-kind shrouding drew a lot of interest all weekend. That's an advantage of being a big honcho at Ron Davis Racing Radiators.
It's unlikely that these pieces will see further production, according to Doug, because they are labor intensive to make.
The array of Early Broncos at the show was outstanding again. I heard there were over ten dozen expected. Hats off to Steve Sampson and the EBR folks for again doing a great job promoting EB attendance and doing support for the show.
It's always great to see all the vendor's and their rigs, like Suzanne Duff from Duffs, Chuck Atkinson from B.C. Broncos, Lonnie Bright from Tom's Bronco Parts, Joe Monroe from Extreme Automotive and probably some I missed.
The crowds were large and appreciative of all the various Fords, as they have been every time I've attended. ACB members John Moojen and Doug Larson independently showed up at the event without their Broncos to further swell the Arizona presence.
A strange thing happened on the way back. Doug left ahead of the rest of us and was buzzing along far ahead in his GT-40 equipped, salute to veterans (that's right, his 'THX VETS' license plate means 'Thanks Veterans', not 'Thanks Veterinarians'). Somewhere out around Indio Doug and his crew stopped to eat dinner. When they were once again ready to hit the road Doug put the hammer down and blasted out onto the freeway--right into the rocking chair position of our Bronco Convoy! Seeing it happen from the tail end, I had assumed that Doug must have called our earstwhile leader (Todd) on his cell phone and somehow arranged this seamless, high-speed merger of antique iron in mid flight. I knew there hadn't been any warning on the CB. It turns out it was totally coincidence! Wow.
Speaking of wow, how about a combined 3200 miles on four Broncos with a combined age of 135 years over a weekend with not one problem of any kind?
